ICC: Taking Action Against Poverty
October 17 has been designated the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty by the United Nations. Globally, world leaders will once again address the topic, and thousands of individuals will pledge their resources to work toward ending poverty and improving the lives of the billions affected by poverty. This year’s celebration at the United Nations will focus in particular on children and families living in poverty and the voices of those children affected. (See the UN website for more details.)
International Child Care marks the day with a continued commitment to achieving health and wholeness for children facing poverty and disease on the island of Hispaniola. Through numerous programs in both Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and thanks to your support, children with special needs are receiving therapy and attending school. Children at risk for malnutrition are tracked and treated by community health workers . In Haiti, mothers receive appropriate prenatal health care and are able to have safe, clean deliveries thanks to the resources and supplies you have given so generously. Grace Children’s Hospital opens the doors for treatment and education of children suffering diseases like malaria, malnutrition, HIV/AIDS and also offers educational opportunities for admitted children. With the help of faithful supporters, children have opportunities to access health and education that will help to lead them out of poverty.
For more than forty years, ICC has been at work in Hispaniola. With your support and commitment to our work, we will continue our efforts to reduce child disease and mortality in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Thanks for all you have done and what you continue to do!
